WorldTracker Enduro offers GPS tracking in even the harshest conditions

Written on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by @nadiarizqi

The folks at TrackingTheWorld have already proven themselves to be pretty capable at tracking letters using GPS, but they've now moved up to some considerably more demanding tasks with their new WorldTracker Enduro device, which promises to track anything it's paired with through frigid temperatures, sweltering heat, and other harsh conditions. Of course, it'll also do that with all the accuracy you'd expect, with it making use of both standard GPS and aGPS to avoid any dropouts, and employing a a full range of cellular connectivity options to ensure that it always stays in touch.

Better still, you can also pair it with an optional 8-cell lithium ion battery (pictured above), which not only provides some added protection, but lets the tracker operate for up to six months on a single charge. As with the letter tracker, however, this one apparently won't be available to the general public, but those with a fleet behind 'em can get in touch with TrackingTheWorld to talk pricing.

Samsung's NC10 successor, the N110, announced and reviewed

Written on Monday, March 23, 2009 by @nadiarizqi

There's nothing like a little surprise to get the week off on the right foot, so thanks to Samsung for getting us rolling by sneaking a successor to its venerable NC10 netbook straight into the willing hands of Laptop Magazine, where it was stealthily given the full review treatment. From what we can tell this new N110 is mainly a style refresh, offering the same keyboard 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, memory, and storage of the NC10, as well as the bigger battery and more usable touchpad the company added to the recent special edition -- now clad in a sophisticated, red-rimmed, matte exterior.

With battery life topping eight hours in real-world usage, and a price of $469, this one picks up where its predecessor left off and seems like a good choice for those who want a little more style with their netbooking -- or who are too impatient to wait for the NC20.

SanDisk slotRadio player launching to much fanfare on March 31st

Written on Saturday, March 21, 2009 by @nadiarizqi

Oh, wait.... we were just kidding about the whole "to much fanfare" bit. SanDisk's slotRadio player, which we're still struggling to understand, is all set to ship on March 31st after debuting alongside a gazillion other gadgets at CES. For those who've forced themselves to forget, this microSD music player can handle your own jams on your own microSD card, or alternatively, can accept pre-loaded Billboard hits cards which house over 1,000 songs that are nicely categorized by genre.

It'll be available from SanDisk's own website on March 31st for $99 (which includes a card with over a thousand songs), and it should be ready to ruin Father's Day when it slips into Radio Shack locations shortly thereafter.

Nintendo working up "major app strategy" for DSi

Written on Friday, March 20, 2009 by @nadiarizqi

Every major handset has one, so why not the handheld gaming consoles, right? According to a report on Develop, the suits at Nintendo are thinking of making the DSi Shop a bit more than it is right now. Reportedly, bigwigs from the Big N who met up at a company developer conference in London discussed "an exciting and major new app strategy for the DSi," with one source noting that the firm was keen on having devs "offer all kinds of software once the DSi store fully launches in Europe and America."

It makes sense to have downloadable short-form titles available; after all, the DSi has an inbuilt camera and microphone, making it perfect for downloading "DSi Ware-like" apps. We'll be keeping a close eye on Iwata's Game Developers Conference keynote for more insight, but 'til then, we're filing this one in the "we want to believe" folder.

Freecom's ToughDrive Sport external HDD is tough, also a drive

Written on Thursday, March 19, 2009 by @nadiarizqi

Okay Mr. (or Mrs.) Fumblefingers, you've got your Toughbook for high-impact computing on the go, but when you just need to take that presentation into the office and you don't want to lug your bombproof notebook with you it's time for a rugged external HDD, and Freecom's ToughDrive Sport is the latest. It's a rubberized enclosure sporting drives in 250, 320, and 500GB flavors, protecting them from drops of up to 2 meters while its 256 bit MD5 hardware encryption protects your data from would-be spies -- and from anyone on a Mac, since it's PC-only.

The $219 drive (for 500GB) doesn't appear to be waterproof, or even resistant, but hey, check out that USB cable. It looks like a climbing rope!

ASUS PC In The Future

Written on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 by @nadiarizqi

Funny. After making a brief appearance on ASUS' website, its top-end EeeBox PC B208 disappeared. Fortunately, there's Google cache. The B208 trumps ASUS' B206 by slapping a dual-core, 1.6GHz Atom 330 processor into the slim, monitor-riding slab as well as 256MB of ATI Radeon Hd 4350 graphics.

That should help make the most of the built-in HDMI port and 320GB hard disk (plus 4x USB 2.0) should you like to use the little guy as a make-shift 802.11n / gigabit Ethernet media server (buzzing along at 26dB) on your home network. No price given but we expect it to pop for less than 500 bucks, eventually.

IDC Predicts Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments To Fall 8.3% in 2009

Written on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 by @nadiarizqi

The worldwide mobile phone market felt the full effects of the economic crisis in the fourth quarter of 2008 as shipments fell 11.6% year over year, marking the first time the holiday quarter has not recorded double digit growth in seven years. This closed out a year that was dismal at best, yet overall 2008 managed to grow 4.3% over 2007. This has set the stage for what IDC predicts to be a very rough 2009, with the most recent market forecast anticipating growth of -8.3% for the year.

As consumer spending has dropped, handset manufacturers and mobile operators have reduced supply on hand, which has left chip vendors with increased inventory. Inventory management has had a dramatic impact on shipments, but consumer demand is not falling as fast. Large chip vendors have been working to restructure inventory levels over the past couple of months to deal with the expected downward year and should see some stabilization once inventories are reduced.

Mature regions such as Japan, the United States and Western Europe all face tough times, with predictions of shipment declines ranging from -24.6% to -12.4% throughout 2009. In these markets, operators are struggling to find the right mix of marketing and device subsidy to entice consumers to spend while finances are tight. The double-digit growth rates the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) have seen in the past are also expected to slow to a collective growth rate of 0.3%. India still remains the bright spot within that group, while Russia is experiencing a severe cut back in consumer spending and is predicted to drop significantly.

“Expectations for 2009 were negative going into the fourth quarter of 2008. However, worse-than-expected results and a steady flow of negative economic news are indicating that 2009 will be gloomier than predicted,” said Ryan Reith, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker. “Concern is understandable during this time, but note that the mobile phone market still has plenty of room to grow on a global scale and we expect recovery will begin in the first half of 2010.”

The outlook for converged mobile devices (also known as smartphones) has also been scaled back as a result of the industry’s changing dynamics. The previously stated 8.7% growth has been reduced to 3.4% as IDC expects all segments to be effected. In the years to come the industry will undoubtedly migrate more toward the converged device segment, yet in tough economic times the high price point these devices carry can tend to stand out in the consumers eye. The notion that this segment will remain in positive growth while the industry expects an 8.3% downturn speaks volumes about the potential upside for these devices when the market turns.

“The explosive growth of mobile applications adds a new dimension to converged mobile device growth, one that has resonated with users worldwide,” says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. “The success of the Apple iPhone and App Store has shifted the paradigm for consumer behavior around this category, and new mobile applications pop up every day. Now that other companies are poised to launch their own mobile application sites this year, IDC expects continued growth for converged mobile devices in the face of an challenging market overall.”
